A brief Introduction to the Poet
John Edward Masefield, an English poet and writer, was born on 1 June 1878 in Ledbury. He was admitted to the King’s School in 1888. But he left the school to board HMS Conway in 1891. He was mostly known for children’s novels like “The Midnight Folk”, “The Box of Delights”. His most popular poems are “The Everlasting Mercy”, ” Sea Fever”.
‘Sea Fever’ was first published in 1902 Salt-Water Ballads. This poem speaks about the poet’s never-ending love for the sea.

কবি এই কবিতার মধ্যে দিয়ে তার সমুদ্রের প্রতি ভালবাসার প্রকাশ করেছেন। কবি তাই একটা জাহাজে চড়ে বেরিয়ে পড়তে চাইছেন সে কারণে তার প্রয়োজন একটা দিক নির্ণয়কারী উজ্জ্বল তারা। কবি সমুদ্রে বার বার যেতে চান, জোয়ারের স্রোতের ডাকে, যে ডাককে উপেক্ষা করা যায়না।
যে দিন আকাশে সাদা মেঘে ভেসে বেড়াবে আর সুন্দর বাতাস বইবে এমনি এক দিনে শঙ্খচিলের কান্নার আকুতিকে সঙ্গে নিয়েই তিনি যেতে চান।
কবি এই কবিতায় বার বার তার সমুদ্রে বেরোনোর কথা উল্লেখ করেছেন। শাণিত হাওয়ার সাথে শঙ্খচিল ও তিমিদের পথ ধরে ভবঘুরেদের মত এগিয়ে যাবেন। তিনি চান রূপকথার নাবিকের মত যাত্রা করতে এবং যাত্রা শেষে সেই সুন্দর স্বপ্ন নিয়ে চিরঘুমে ডুব দিতে চান।

“I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And the grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.”

I want to go to the sea again. I want to go to the lonesome sea and the sky. I am talking about a big ship and about a star who will guide the ship. The kick of the wheel, the song sang by the wind and the shaking of the white herd. The grey fog on the face of the sea, and a grey cock-crow interruption.
“I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flunf spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.”
Due to the call of the racing tidewater, I have to go to the sea again. An evident and savage call that can not be disavowed. And all that I want is a stormy day with the floating white clouds. The scattered gust, the blooming seethe, and the weeping of the Sea-gulls.
“I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where wind’s like whetted knief;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over”
I need to go to the sea again, to the vagabond gipsy lifestyle. To the path of the gull and whale where the wind seems to be poignant. And all I inquire is a jubilant tale from a laughing brethren pirate. After a long voyage a calm sleep and sweet dream.
Summary of Sea Fever
The poet describes in this poem, his love for the sea and its creatures. The poet needs a hearty ship to sail and a bright star to guide him in the darkness. He loves to feel the racing tidewater. The call of the sea attracts the poet that he can not ignore. The poet as a nature lover does not want to miss the weeping of the seagulls. The poet loves to lead a vagabond life.
He is feeling tired and exhausted from everyday routine. So he seeks a gipsy, savage life where he can relax in the lap of nature. Even he wants to hear the tales, experiences from the pirates. Yet the life of a sailor is not easy also. Because life in the sea has so many contrasts like cruel winds and wild waves, but those can be harmonized together to enjoy a beautiful voyage. Adventures, wander-lust, memories are the most important themes of this poem.
