কবি পরিচিতি
হেনরী ওয়ার্ডসওয়ারথ লংফেলো (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) হলেন আমেরিকার একজন বিখ্যাত কবি। তিনি ছন্দবদ্ধ কবিতার জন্য জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করেছিলেন, তাঁর লেখায় পৌরাণিক বিষয়ের ব্যবহার দেখা যায়। তাঁর রচিত বিখ্যাত কবিতাসংকলন হল “ভয়েসেস অফ দ্য নাইট”।

An April Day হলো প্রকৃতির সৌন্দর্য উদযাপনের কবিতা।এই কবিতায় কবি এপ্রিল মাসের একটি সুন্দর দিনের বর্ণনা দিয়েছেন। তার মাধ্যমে কবি বসন্ত ঋতুর প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যের এক অসাধারণ দৃশ্য ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন।
কবিতা শুরু হয় সূর্যের ফিরে আসার খবর দিয়ে। বসন্ত এবার পৃথিবীর দরজায় কড়া নাড়ছে।শীতকালে সব গাছপালা যেনো শুকিয়ে ম্যারম্যারে হয়ে গেছিলো,তাদের বৃদ্ধিও গেছিলো থেমে।সূর্য ফিরে আসার কারণে তারা নতুন করে উজ্জীবিত হয়ে উঠেছে।ফসল ফলানোর আদর্শ সময় ও চলে এসেছে। চারিদিকে রংবেরংয়ের ফুল ফুটে উঠেছে,শস্যে মাঠ ভরে গেছে।
কবি জানিয়েছেন যে এটিই তার প্রিয়ঋতু।
এই সময়ে চারিদিক সবুজ গাছপালা ও ফলমূলে ভরে যাওয়ায় জঙ্গলের মধ্যে দিয়ে ঘোরার আনন্দই অন্য রকমের হয়। মেঘে ঢাকা আকাশ এবং ঝড়বৃষ্টিরও অস্তিত্ব থাকেনা। সারা শীতকাল জুড়ে বৃষ্টিপাত ও বরফ পরার জন্য মানুষের জীবন হয়ে থাকে দুর্বিসহ। তাই এপ্রিলমাসের আগমন যেন সমগ্র পৃথিবীকে পুনরায় জাগিয়ে তোলে। এপ্রিলের আগমনে ঝড়ঝাপটা, ও শীতের রুক্ষ শুষ্ক হিম শীতল প্রকৃতি যেন হয়ে ওঠে স্নিগ্ধ সতেজ।
তৃতীয় স্তবকে কবি বলেছেন শস্যের অঙ্কুরোদগমের কথা।
শীতের ভীষন ঠান্ডায় প্রায় জমে যাওয়া শস্যের বীজগুলি কোনরকমে মাটি থেকে তাদের বেচেঁ থাকার মতো নূন্যতম পুষ্টি নিয়ে অক্ষত থাকে। শীতকাল যেনো তাদের কাছে এক কঠিন পরীক্ষা যাতে তাদের উত্তীর্ণ হতেই হবে। শীতকালে বরফাবৃত জঙ্গল সকল পাতা ঝরিয়ে হয়ে উঠেছিলো রিক্ত, শূন্য। কিন্তু বসন্তের ছোঁয়া গাছে গাছে আবার নতুন পাতার আগমন ঘটায়, ধীরে ধীরে সবুজ হয়ে ওঠে চারিদিক।
এপ্রিল মাস আসার সাথে সাথে বসন্তের ছোঁয়ায় সুপ্ত বীজেরা পুনরায় জাগ্রত হয়। এপ্রিল মাসের বৈচিত্র্যতায় কবি মুগ্ধ। পাখিদের কাকলিতে ভরে ওঠে চারিদিক।বসন্ত শুরু হতেই পাখিরা তাদের শীতনিদ্রা কাটিয়ে জেগে ওঠে। সূর্যের মিঠে রোদ গায়ে লাগিয়ে তারা রংবেরংয়ের ডানা মেলে উড়ে বেড়ায়। কবি তাদের মিষ্টি গানে যেন একপ্রকার সম্মোহিত হয়ে যান।

কবিতায় কবি পাহাড়ের ঢালে বসন্ত বিকেলের সূর্যাস্তের অপূর্ব বর্ণনা দিয়েছেন। সূর্য যখন সন্ধেবেলায় অস্ত যায় তখন সারা পাহাড়,জঙ্গল সূর্যের শেষবেলার আভায় আলোকিত হয়ে ওঠে। পাহাড়চুড়া থেকে দিগ্বিদিকে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে সেই সোনালী আভা। জঙ্গলের সবুজ গাছের সারি তখন সূর্যের সোনালি আভায় আলোকিত হয়ে ওঠে। এই অসাধারণ দৃশ্য কবিকে বিস্মিত করে।

An April Day is a poem of celebration of nature.
In this poem, the poet highlights one beautiful day in the month of April. Through that, he accurately paints a vivid picture of spring season.
That poem begins with the joyous news of the return of the Sun.
“When the warm suns, that brings
Seed time and harvest, has returned again,”
Spring is knocking at the door. Trees, plants and Flowers’ growth had been paused due to the cold harsh winter. But now that the sun has arrived, they feel rejuvenated by the sunrays. It is also the perfect time for harvest since the weather is sunny. Flowers are seen blooming everywhere on the plain, fruits ripening up. Vegetation is seen growing all over the fields.
The poet says that he loves the season very much. In this season, the marshy forest lands get covered with colorful flowers and plants.
“I love the season well”
It is a joy to walk amidst the woods. Throughout the winter, the world is draped in layers of snow and sudden rainfalls, which makes the lives of people haphazard. But April brings forth clear sky. No sign of dark clouds are seen. The stormy days are replaced by the bright sun rays.
“From the earth loosened mould
The sapling draws its sustenance,”
The third stanza talks about the reproduction and germination of the seeds. The seeds that had frozen due to the cold harsh winter still somehow survive, getting their necessary nourishment from the soil they were planted on. It is as if the winter is a tough test that the seeds have to go through. April comes bringing spring and resurrects these saplings into life. The growth of the new saplings come as an indication of freshness and youth in nature. Winter saw trees draped in ice with most of their leaves fallen off of their branches. These lifeless trees with droopy leaves come back to life with spring’s magic touch.

Comes from the pleasant woods,”
In the fourth stanza the poet explains the other splendors and joy springs brings with its arrival. The music of the birds are heard echoing all around the woods. In the month of April, the birds come out of their long hibernation. They spread their colourful wings and fly around the sun, filling the forest with joy and happiness. The poet is comforted by their melodious chirping. The coldness and lifelessness of the winter is replaced by the magic and enthusiasm of the spring time. The joy of nature can be felt through and through.
The silver woods with light,the green slopes throws
Its shadwos in the hollows of the hill,”
In the fifth stanza, the poet gives a picturesque description of the sunset in the hills during April. As the sun sets on the horizon, the timber and valleys are bathed in the last bits of sunrays. The forest and the mountain tops glow silver in coluor. The lush green trees in the forest, now bathed in yellow sunlight, cast their golden shadow on the hills. The poet is enchanted by this beautiful scenery and exclaims his appreciation for nature.
The poem takes the readers on a joyful ride through the splendors of nature during spring. The poet beautifully describes how enchanted he is with the beauty of the month of April. Spring’s relation with the environment and it’s effects on the living beings is depicted. Describing all the beautiful things observed in a single day of April, the poet welcomes spring wholeheartedly.
