A brief introduction to the author
Jane Hyatt Yolen (1939-) is an American writer of fantasy, science fiction and children’s books. She is the author of over 300 books, of which she is best known for The Devil’s Arithmetic and Holocaust novella. Some of her other works are Nebula Award-winning short story Sister Emily’s Lightship,the novelette Owl Moon,The Commander Toad, Lost Girls and so on.
Wind Cap is one of her popular short stories for children.
Summary of The Wind Cap
Once a boy named Jon wished to become a sailor. But since he was a farmer’s son and did not know anything about the sea, his mother advised him against it. Disappointed, Jon obeyed his mother and went to work at the farm. One day while ploughing, he almost ran over a turtle amidst a lump of dirt. He picked it up and put it in his head to keep it safe. After finishing his work when he plucked it from his head, he was surprised to see that
the turtle had turned into a small green fairy man!
Out of gratitude,the fairy man told Jon that he would grant his wish. Even though Jon said nothing, the fairy man understood his desire to sail and gave him a magic cap. The cap could bring in wind according to his wish. However It had one condition, that no human was to take it off of his head.
When Jon showed the cap to his mother, she was doubtful. But Jon did not listen to her cautions. The very next day he approached the captain of a ship anchored nearby their farm.
Thus he went off for his first voyage.
Due to fairy man’s condition Jon could not take off his cap in front of the captain, neither when he was about to sleep. The good part was that it could not be stolen. Since with one twist of his cap he could call in the wind as he wished to navigate the ship, he became very popular among the sailors. After a year on the ship he was starting to feel homesick but the captain did not let him go ashore.
One afternoon Jon fell asleep and started to dream about the seasons changing. With each season change, Jon tossed and turned in his bed. The cap being on his head also twisted and as a result
It brought in stormy wind which hit the ship.
The sailors blamed Jon and tried to snatch his cap away. But since it was a magical cap, they all failed. The stormy wind turned into the most ferocious storm they had ever seen.
Out of anger the ship’s captain threw Jon into the sea.
As Jon went under the waves the cap came off of his head. The storm stopped and Jon swam ashore. The cap followed him. After reaching the land, he took the cap and went home.
In the Winter when Jon began to dream of the sea again, he took the cap and went into the field.
He placed it under a rock for the fairy man to find it.
For the rest of his life Jon spent half a year on a ship and half on the shore. At last he owned his own boat and farmland. From then on he came to be known as Captain Turtle as he was comfortable in both the sea and the land.

অনেকদিন আগে, এক চাষীর ছেলে জন, নাবিক হওয়ার স্বপ্ন দেখতো। কিন্তু সমুদ্রের ব্যাপারে তার কোনো ধারণাই ছিল না, তাই তার মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দিতেন না। তার কষ্ট হত কিন্তু সে তার মায়ের অবাধ্য হতনা। সে খামারের কাজ করেই দিন কাটাত। একদিন সে লাঙ্গল দিয়ে কাজ করার সময় একটি কচ্ছপকে প্রায় চাপা দিতে দিতে দেখতে পায়, তখনই সে তাকে উদ্ধার করে এবং কচ্ছপটিকে বাঁচানোর জন্যে সেটাকে তার নিজের মাথায় তুলে নেয়। কাজ শেষ হওয়ার পর যখন সেই কচ্ছপটিকে মাথা থেকে নামাতে যায় তখন এক অবাক কাণ্ড ঘটে, সে দেখে
যে কচ্ছপটি বদলে গিয়ে একটি সবুজ ছোট যাদুমানব-এ পরিনত হয়েছে।
এবং সেই যাদুমানব জনকে তার জীবন রক্ষার জন্য কৃতজ্ঞতা জানাতে জনের মনের একটি ইচ্ছা পূরণ করতে চায়। কিন্তু জন তার মায়ের নিষেধের জন্য অনেক ভেবেও তার একমাত্র মনোবাসনা বলতে পারে না। কিন্তু ঐ যাদুমানব তার সমুদ্রযাত্রার ইচ্ছের কথা বুঝতে পেরে তাকে একটি জাদু টুপি উপহার দেয়। সেই টুপির এক অদ্ভুত ক্ষমতা আছে, সেটি বাতাসের যোগান দিতে পারে, যা প্রধানত নাবিকদের প্রয়োজন হয়। এখানে একটা কথা মনে রাখতে হবে যে এটা যে সময়ের গল্প, সেই সময়ে যন্ত্রজাহাজ ছিল না, পালতোলা জাহাজ মূলত হাওয়ার জোরেই চালানো হত। তাই সেই সময়ের নাবিকদের কাছে হাওয়ার গুরুত্ব ছিল অপরিসীম।
ঐ যাদুমানব জনকে মনে করিয়ে দেয় যে টুপিটির একটা শর্ত আছে, কোনো মানুষ সেটাকে জনের মাথা থেকে খুলে নিতে পারবে না।
এই সকল বিস্ময়কর ঘটনা জন তার মাকে বাড়ি ফিরেই জানায়, কিন্তু মায়ের এসবে যেন ঠিক বিশ্বাস জন্মায় না, অবশ্য জনের আগ্রহের শেষ নেই। সে পরের দিনই বাড়ির সামনে নোঙর করে রাখা একটি জাহাজের ক্যাপ্টেন এর সাথে কথা বলে সমুদ্র যাত্রায় বেরিয়ে পড়ে।

জাহাজে উঠে সে টুপিটিকে মোচড় দিতে শুরু করে, আর তাতেই সকলকে চমকে দিয়ে জাহাজ চালানোর জন্যে প্রয়োজনীয় বাতাস বইতে শুরু করেছে। এসব দেখে জাহাজের নাবিকরা জনের ওপর খুবই খুশি হয়। তবে একটা সমস্যা, সেই জাদু টুপিকে জন মাথা থেকে কখনই খুলতে পারেনা এমনকি শোওয়ার সময়ও সেটিকে মাথায় নিয়ে তাকে শুতে হয়। অবশ্য এতে টুপিটা চুরি যাবার ভয় থেকে সে রক্ষা পায়।
এক বছর এভাবেই কেটে গেল।
আস্তে আস্তে জনেরও বাড়ির জন্য মন খারাপ করতে শুরু করল, কিন্তু ক্যাপ্টেনের কাছ থেকে তার বাড়ি ফেরার অনুমতি জুটল না।
মনের দুঃখে একদিন জন বিকেলবেলা ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিল। ঘুমিয়ে ঘুমিয়ে সে ঋতু পরিবর্তনের একটা স্বপ্ন দেখল। স্বপ্নে ঋতু পরিবর্তনের সাথে সাথে জনও বিছানায় এপাশ ওপাশ করতে থাকে। এদিকে টুপি পরিহিত জনের এইরুপ নড়ন-চরন প্রবল ঝোড়ো হাওয়ার সৃষ্টি করে। সেই প্রবল ঝোড়ো হাওয়ার ধাক্কায় তাদের জাহাজ বিপর্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ে।এই কাণ্ডে জাহাজের নাবিকরা জনের ওপর খুব রেগে গিয়ে তার টুপি কেড়ে নিতে চেষ্টা করে। কিন্তু টুপিটাতো যে সে টুপি নয়! সেটা জাদু টুপি, তাই তারা সবাই ব্যর্থ হয়। এদিকে টুপি নিয়ে এই প্রবল টানাটানিতে সেই ঝোড়ো হাওয়া ক্রমেই ভয়ংকর ঝড়ে পরিনত হয়।আকাশের এই ভয়ানক মূর্তি দেখে রাগের মাথায় জাহাজের ক্যাপ্টেন জনকে সমুদ্রে ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দেয়। সমুদ্রের প্রবল স্রোতে টুপিটা জনের মাথা থেকে খুলে যায়।ফলে সেই ভয়ঙ্কর ঝড় সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। জনও তার সুবিধামত তখনই সাঁতরে তীরে গিয়ে ওঠে। টুপিটিও তাকে অনুসরণ করে তার কাছে পৌঁছতেই সে টুপিটিকে তুলে নিয়ে বাড়ি ফেরে।
শীত পড়তে না পড়তেই জন আবারও সমুদ্রে যাওয়ার স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করে। কিন্তু এবার সে তার জাদু টুপিটিকে নিয়ে মাঠে গিয়ে একটি পাথরের নিচে এমনভাবে রেখে এসেছিল যাতে সেই যাদুমানব টুপিটিকে সহজেই খুঁজে পায়। তার জীবনের বাকিটা জন অর্ধেক সময় সমুদ্রে ও অর্ধেক সময় স্থলেই কাটিয়ে দেয়। শেষমেষ তার নিজস্ব নৌকা ও অনেক জমিজমা হয়। সে জল এবং স্থল দুজায়গাতেই স্বচ্ছন্দবোধ করতো তাই সে পরবর্তীকালে ক্যাপ্টেন টার্টল নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে।
