A brief introduction to the author
Intizar Hussain was a famous Pakistani writer who was known for his Urdu short stories, novels ,poems and non-fictions. He is widely considered as one of the leading literary figures in Pakistan and has been awarded numerous times in Pakistan, India and Middle East.The Seventh Door and Leaves are among some of his famous works translated into English.
The Clouds is one of his popular short stories for children.
Summary of ‘Clouds’
The story is about a boy who was in search of clouds.
He went through many valleys and meadows in his quest. He kept on asking the passersby about where the clouds have gone. But wherever he went, he met with unsatisfactory answers. He first met a grass-cutter and then a farmer. Both were baffled by his strange question and could not give him a clear answer. Disappointed, the boy walked on.
It was as if the clouds were his lost children, and he was the helpless father, going around asking people where they have gone!
His mother was the first person whom he had asked about his peculiar query in the morning.His mother however, scolded him for asking such stupid question. Previous night, he had seen clouds gathering in the sky.
But by the time he went to bed, the sky had cleared up and was full of stars.
When he woke up again at the middle of the night, he saw clouds rumbling in the sky again. The occasional flashes of lightning made it seem like it was going to rain. But in the morning he was surprised to see that the sky was clear and there was no sign of rainfall!
He felt disheartened thinking that because of him falling asleep, the clouds had disappeared without a drop of rain. Had he stayed awake, he would have seen monsoon’s first rain.
The month of rain was passing-by yet there was no sign of clouds. After walking between fields in the scorching heat, the boy became terribly thirsty and tired.
But at last he found a huge tree with a Persian wheel under its shade.
To him, it was like an oasis in the middle of a desert. Overjoyed, he washed his hands, face and feet with the cold water from the Persian wheel and drank it’s water to his heart’s content.
After freshening up, he saw an old man sitting on a wall by the Persian wheel. Hesitantly when the boy asked him if the clouds had visited there, the old man replied that when the clouds would come, the earth and the sky would know of its coming.
He also said that it is not enough for only the clouds to come unless it rains, as he had lived somewhere where it hadn’t rained in ten years. Fascinated, the boy sat there listening to the old man’s stories, until he realized that it was getting late. So he went back following the same dirt road under the scorching heat of the sun. But when he reached the mud hut near his village, he felt that the air was chilly and the roads were wet. Trees draped in layers of dust looked freshly bathed and clean. Overjoyed, he ran home and thus saw how the monsoon rain had changed everything!
His favourite Jamun tree looked clean and freshly showered. His mother was thanking God for granting them such a good shower.Then the boy stood beneath the Jamun tree which was still dripping with water and let the droplets fall on face. He looked above at the clear sky with no traces of clouds. He wondered how he had walked so far in dust and heat, in search of the clouds.
Yet the clouds came in his absence, shed the rain and had gone away.

এই গল্পের নায়ক হলো একটি ছোট্ট ছেলে, যে মেঘের সন্ধানে বেড়িয়েছিল।
মেঘের খোঁজে সে দিগন্তের পর দিগন্ত পেরিয়েছে। রাস্তায় যাকেই পেয়েছে সে, তাকেই জিজ্ঞেসা করেছে যে ‘মেঘেরা কোথায়?’। তার প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে তো কেউ পারেইনি শুধুই সকলে অবাক হয়েছে। প্রথমে তার সাথে এক ঘাসুড়ে (যারা ঘাস কাটেন) দেখা হয় এবং তারপর এক চাষীর। কিন্তু তারা কেউই তার প্রশ্নের যথাপোযুক্ত উত্তর দিতে পারেনি। হতাশ হলেও ছেলেটি এগিয়ে চলে।সন্তান হারিয়ে গেলে অসহায় বাবা যেমন দিশাহারা হয়ে খুজে বেড়ায় তাঁর সন্তানকে, ছেলেটিও মেঘেদের যেন তেমন হন্য হয়েই খুঁজতে থাকে।
সকালে উঠে সবার প্রথম সে তার মায়ের কাছেই এই অদ্ভুত প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজেছিল। কিন্তু তার মা তাকে ধমকে চুপ করিয়ে দেন। তবে আগের দিন রাতে আকাশে সে মেঘ জমতে দেখেছিল। কিন্তু শোওয়ার সময় হতে না হতেই আকাশ পরিস্কার হয়ে যায়। মাঝরাতে যখন ছেলেটির আবার ঘুম ভাঙে, তখন সে আবারও দেখে আকাশে মেঘ জমতে।
মাঝে মাঝে বিদ্যুতের ঝলকানি দেখে সে মনে মনে ভাবে এই বুঝি বৃষ্টি হবে।কিন্তু সকালে উঠে সে অবাক হয়ে দেখে যে আকাশ মেঘমুক্ত, বৃষ্টির দেখা সেই সকালেও নেই! আকাশের উজ্জ্বল মুখ ছেলেটির মুখ কালো করে দেয়, সে তার রাতের ঘুমকেই বৃষ্টিহীনতার জন্য দায়ী করে। সে চিন্তা করে, জেগে থাকলে হয়তো মেঘেরা তাকে মরশুমের প্রথম বৃষ্টিপাত দেখাত।
বর্ষাকাল শেষ হতে চলল কিন্তু মেঘের দেখা নেই।
দুপুর রোদে মাঠের পর মাঠ হাঁটতে হাঁটতে তৃষ্ণায় ছেলেটির গলা কাঠ হয়ে যায়, শরীরও ক্লান্তিতে আর চলেনা। অনেক দূর হাঁটার পর, সে এক বড় গাছের তলায় এক পার্শি জলচক্র দেখতে পেল।
ধূধূ মরুভূমির মধ্যে মরুদ্যান-এর মত যেন জলচক্রটি দণ্ডায়মান। প্রচন্ড খুশি হয়ে ছেলেটা জলচক্রের জল দিয়ে হাত,মুখ ধুয়ে প্রাণ ভরে জল পান করে।
জল খেয়ে আশ্বস্ত হয়ে উঠে সে দেখলো এক বৃদ্ধ জলচক্রের পাশে পাঁচিলের উপর বসে আছে।ইতঃস্ততভাবে সে সেই বৃদ্ধের কাছেও মেঘেদের সন্ধান করল। এর প্রত্যুত্তরে সে জানতে পারল, মেঘেদের আগমন সারা বিশ্ব জানতে পারে।
তিনি আরো বলেন যে বৃষ্টিহীন মেঘ গুরুত্বহীন! তিনি এমনও স্থানেও বাস করেছেন যেখানে দশ বছর বৃষ্টি হয়নি। ছেলেটি মুগ্ধ হয়ে অনেকক্ষণ ধরে বৃদ্ধটির গল্প শুনলো,পরে তার দেরি হয়ে যাচ্ছে দেখে,সে দুপুর রোদ মাথায় নিয়ে পূর্বের কর্দমাক্ত রাস্তা ধরেই পুনরায় হাঁটা শুরু করল। গ্রামের কাছাকাছি আসতেই সে বাতাসের এক শীতল স্পর্শ পেলো। সে দেখলো,তার পায়ের তলায় জমিও স্যাঁতস্যাতে।

যে গাছগুলো আগে ধুলোয় ঢাকা ছিল,সেগুলিও যেন সদ্য স্নানে স্নিগ্ধ!
আনন্দে একছুটে সে বাড়ি পৌঁছে দেখলো কিভাবে মরশুমের প্রথম বৃষ্টি সব বদলে দিয়েছে। তার প্রিয় জামগাছটি বহুদিনের ধুলো ঝেড়ে বৃষ্টির জলে সতেজতা ফিরে পেয়েছে। তার মা এই মনোরম বৃষ্টির জন্য ঈশ্বরকে বারংবার ধন্যবাদ জানাচ্ছিলেন। ছেলেটি তার প্রিয় জামগাছটির তলায় এসে দাঁড়ালো।গাছের পাতা থেকে গড়িয়ে পরা বৃষ্টির জল তার মুখে, দেহে পড়ে তাকে এক নৈস্বরগিক সুখানুভূতি দিল।উপরে তাকিয়ে সে দেখলো পরিষ্কার মেঘমুক্ত আকাশ।
সে তখন উপলদ্ধি করল, অকারণেই সে মেঘের সন্ধানে দিগ-দিগন্তে অনুসন্ধান করেছে, আর ঠিক সেই ফাঁকেই মেঘেরা বৃষ্টি দিয়ে পালিয়ে গেছে।
