Liam O’Flaherty was an Irish novelist and short story writer. Brutal naturalism, psychological analysis, poetry and biting satire were reflected in his works. He had a great respect for the valour and endurance of the Irish people. He took part in the First World War as a soldier. “Thy Neighbour’s Wife” was his successful first novel. His notable works are “The Black Soul”, “The Informer”, “Famine” etc. “His First Flight” is regarded as one of his most famous work, which draws the picture of a nervous young seagull who is learning how to fly.

এই গল্পটি একটি ছোট্ট সিগালের প্রথম উড়তে শেখার গল্প। সিগালটি একটি পাহাড়ে একা দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল। তার আগেই তার দুই ভাই বোন উড়তে শিখে গিয়েছিল। যখনই সে পাহাড়ের ধারে চলে আসছিল তার ভয় হচ্ছিল। নীচে বিশাল সমুদ্র ও তার নিজের ডানার ওপর কোনো ভরসা ছিল না। সে মাথা নিচু করে দৌড়ে তার কুঠুরির ভেতর চলে যেত, সেখানেই সে সারারাত থাকত। এইভাবেই পুরো একটা দিন কেটে যায়, সেই ছোট্ট সিগালটি একাই পাহাড়ে কাটায়। ওর মা–বাবা ওর ভাই–বোনদের উড়তে উৎসাহ দিত এবং কিভাবে মাছ ধরতে হয় তা শেখাত। ছোট্ট সিগালটির বড় ভাই তার জীবনের প্রথম শিকারস্বরুপ একটা হেরিং মাছ ধরেছিল, যা তার মা–বাবাকে গর্বিত করে।
সূর্য উঠেছে এবং তার উষ্ণ রশ্মিতে সারা পৃথিবী ছেয়ে যাচ্ছে। সিগালটি আগের দিন রাত থেকে কিছুই খায়নি, তাই সে এই রোদে অসুস্থ বোধ করছে। সে কোনোভাবে না উড়ে তার মা–বাবার কাছে পৌঁছাতে চায়।
সে এক পা ডানার নীচে লুকিয়ে অন্য পায়ে দাঁড়িয়ে ঘুমের ভান করত। এমনিতে তার মা–বাবা তার দিকে খেয়াল করত না ঠিকই, কিন্তু একটু উঁচু পাহাড়ের চূড়ায় বসে তার মা মাছ খেতে খেতে তার দিকেই নজর রেখেছিল।
আর থাকতে না পেরে এরপর ছোট্ট বাচ্চা সিগালটি খিদের জ্বালায় কাঁদতে শুরু করে। সেই চিৎকার শুনে তার মাও মাছের একটা টুকরো নিয়ে তার কাছাকাছি একটি স্থানে উড়ে যায় কিন্তু তার মুখের সামনে খাবার নিয়ে যায়না। এইরকম পরিস্থিতিতে খিদে সহ্য করতে না পেরে সেই ছোট্ট সিগালটিও খাবারের উদ্দেশ্য পাহাড় থেকে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে।
এবং প্রায় সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই ভয়ে চিৎকার করে সিগাল ছানাটি নীচের দিকে পড়ে যেতে শুরু করে। সে ভীষণ ভয় পেয়ে যায়; কিন্তু এর ঠিক পরের মুহূর্তেই আপনা থেকেই তার ডানা দুটো বাইরের দিকে ছড়িয়ে যায়। হাওয়া তার পেট, ডানা ছুঁয়ে চলে যায়। সে কয়েকবার ডানা ঝাপটিয়ে নিয়ে এবার উপরের দিকে উড়তে শুরু করে। আনন্দে চিৎকার করে ডেকে ওঠে সিগালটি। তার মা, বাবা, ভাই–বোনেরাও আনন্দে তার চারপাশে উড়তে শুরু করে।
এরপর সে উড়তে উড়তে নীচে এক বিশাল ঘাসের উপত্যকা দেখতে পায়। তার মা–বাবা ভাই বোনেরা সকলে মিলে ঘাসের ওপর নেমে আসে। তারা সবাই ওকে ডাকতে থাকে। অবশেষে সে একদম সঠিক ও সুস্থভাবে সেই সবুজ ঘাসে নামতে পারে। এবং তার গোটা পরিবার প্রথম বার উড়তে শেখার জন্য তাকে প্রশংসায় ভরিয়ে দেয়।
English summary of His First Flight
The story is about a young seagull who is afraid to fly. Though his brothers and sisters already flown away, his fear stopped him. Having seen the great expanse of the sea he lost his trust on his own wings. The call from his parents went in vain.

He was alone for twenty-four hours. His parents were encouraging his siblings and were perfecting their art of fishing. His older brother had caught his first herring, which made his parents proud.
The sun is rising. He felt the heat because he is hungry. There was no food in his straw nest. His little body was going backward and forward on the ledge. He was trying to reach his parents without flying. There was a sea below and towards the north there was no ledge at all and it made him unable to walk.
Closing one eye and then the other the Seagull was pretending to sleep. He was standing on one leg with the other leg hidden under his wings. He saw his brothers and sisters were taking rest and his father was grooming his feathers. His parents took no notice to him. However, from a little high hump his mother was looking at him, while eating a piece of fish. He became mad to see the food.

The seagull cried and made a begging sound for food. His mother picked up a piece of fish and flew across to him. And surprisingly she stopped just before him. He wondered that his mother was not coming nearer. Maddened by hunger, he dived at the fish.
With a scream he fell outwards and downwards. He was caught by a great fear. His heart stood still. But the fear only lasted for a moment and the next moment his wings spread outwards. The wind rushed under his stomach and against his wings. He could feel that the tip of his wings cutting through the air. He was not falling headlong now. He flapped his wings and soared upwards. He was no longer afraid then. He uttered a joyous scream. His mother flew past him. She was screaming in joy and the baby seagull also was screaming in joy; then his father came to him and his siblings also started flying around him.
He saw a vast green sea beneath him and was screaming in joy. His parents and siblings had landed on this green floor. They were calling him. First he dropped his legs and his feet sank into the sea, then his belly touched it. He was floating. He perfectly landed on the green sea. His family was screaming in joy and they were praising him. He had made his first flight.
