দ্য নর্থ শিপ- এর কবি পরিচিতি
Philip Larkin was born in Coventry, England in 1922. He was a famous “post–war” poet of England. Larkin used the traditional tools of poetry to describe modern situation of common people. “The North Ship” was his first volume of poetry. “Church Going”, “ Aubade”, “The Whitsun Weddings”, “ An Arundel Tomb” are his best poems. Larkin was at the starting of his career when he wrote “The North Ship”.

কবিতাটিতে তিনটি জাহাজ ও সমুদ্রের মাধ্যমে কবি মানুষের জীবনের চিত্র তুলে ধরেছেন। তিনটি জাহাজ জীবনের বিভিন্ন অবস্থার চিত্রাঙ্কন করেছে। যখন কবি এই তিনটি জাহাজকে প্রথম দেখেছিলেন আবহাওয়া খুব শান্ত ছিল। কবি বলেছেন যে একটি জাহাজ অনেক দূরে যাত্রা করার জন্য প্রস্তুত ছিল।
প্রথম জাহাজটি পশ্চিম দিকে যাত্রা করেছিল এবং একটি খুব ধনী দেশ আবিষ্কার করেছিল। কবি এখানে এই জাহাজটির মাধ্যমে আমাদের জীবনের সেই দিকটা তুলে ধরেছেন যেখানে আমরা অর্থ ও সম্পদের প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হই এবং সেটাকেই জীবনের লক্ষ্য বলে ধরে নিই।
দ্বিতীয় জাহাজটি পূর্ব দিকে যাত্রা করেছিল এবং সমুদ্রের আবহাওয়া এবার কিছুটা বিপদসংকুল ছিল। সমুদ্রের বাতাস জাহাজটিকে থামিয়ে দিতে ও ধ্বংস করে দিতে চাইছিল। জাহাজটি তার লক্ষ্যে পৌঁছাতে পারেনি এবং এই জাহাজটির মাধ্যমে কবি আমাদের জীবনের ব্যর্থতাকে তুলে ধরেছেন।

তৃতীয় জাহাজটি উত্তর দিকে যাত্রা করেছিল। এই দিকে সমুদ্র খুবই অশান্ত ও ভয়ঙ্কর ছিল, আকাশ কালো মেঘে ভরা ছিল। সমুদ্র এতটাই উদ্ধত ছিল যে তা এই জাহাজটিকে বহন করতেও প্রস্তুত ছিল না। তৃতীয় জাহাজটির মাথার উপরে আকাশ ছিল অনিশ্চিত এবং পায়ের নীচে ছিল এক ভয়ংকর সমুদ্র।
জাহাজটি তার যাত্রা শুরু করেছিল এবং এটি অনেক দূরে যাওয়ার জন্য প্রস্তুত ছিল এবং বোঝাই যাচ্ছিল যে এই জাহাজটি হয়তো আর ফিরবে না। এই জাহাজটি আমাদের জীবনের সে দিকটির প্রতিনিধিত্ব করেছে যেটা বিপদসংকুল ও অনিশ্চয়তায় ভরা, কিন্তু তবু্ও সেই জীবনে আছে, অজানার হাতছানি, নতুন কিছু আবিস্কারের সুযোগ এবং সাধারণ জীবনের বাইরে গিয়ে রোমাঞ্চকর এক জীবনের অনুভূতি।

Line by line meaning of The North Ship
I saw three ships go sailing by,
Over the sea, the lifting sea
The poet saw three ships, which were ready to sail. There was a pleasant weather. The atmosphere of the sea was also pleasant.
And the wind rose in the morning sky
And one was rigged for a long journey
The wind and the weather was proper for sailing. One ship was prepared for a long journey.
The first ship turned towards the west,
Over the sea, the running sea,
The first ship started its journey towards the west. The sea is personified here as “running sea”. The situation of the sea is suitable for sailing.
And by the wind was all possessed
And carried to a rich country
The ship was directed by the wind and the ship reached to a wealthy country.
The second turned towards the east,
Over the sea, the quaking sea,
The second ship started its journey towards the east. Now the environment of the sea is changing and the sea is now dangerous for sailing.
And the wind hunted it like a beast
To anchor in captivity
The wind is devastating and its now trying to destroy the ship like a beast hunts. The ship could not reach its destination due to the dangerous weather.
The third ship drove toward the north,
Over the sea, the darkening sea
The third ship which was rigged for a long journey started its journey towards the north direction. The environment of the sea is not suitable for sailing and its symbolized as “dark”. The picture of a dangerous sea, which is full of pessimism is presented here.
But no breath of wind came forth,
And the decks shone frostily.
The wind stopped blowing and it was extremely dangerous for sailing. It was cold and the decks were shining frostily.
The northern sky rose high and black
Over the proud unfruitful sea
The northern sky was full of black clouds. The sea is personified as ‘proud’ here and the sea was so proud that it could not accept the ship, which was sailing over it.
East and West the ships came back
Happily or unhappily
The west ship came back happily, because its destination was a rich country and the east ship was unhappy because it failed to reach its destination.
But the third went wide and far
Into an unforgiving sea
The north ship continued its journey. It did not stop. The atmosphere of the sea was not on his side. The poet described this nature as ‘unforgiving’.
Under a fire– spilling star,
And it was rigged for a long journey
‘Fire’ is a symbol of danger. The poet wanted to say that the condition of the weather was not in favor of the north ship. Though the atmosphere was negative and it was full of danger, the north ship would continue its journey. It would never come back.
The North Ship- English Summary
The poem projects a picture of life with three ships and sea. The ships represent various situations of life. The weather was pleasant when the poet saw these three ships. The poet said that one ship was ready for a long journey. The first ship sailed towards the west and discovered a rich country. The poet wanted to say that this ship represented the life path which longs for money, fame etc. The second ship which sailed towards the east and faced a challenging environment.
The wind was trying to stop and destroy the ship. The ship failed to reach its destination and that’s why it was unsuccessful in life. The third ship drove towards the north. The sea was dark, fearful. There was no pleasurable atmosphere. The sky was black and the sea was proud. There was an unpredictable sky over the third ship’s head and an unforgiving sea beneath it. The ship started its journey and it was ready for a long journey and it might not come back. This ship symbolized our life, which is unfamiliar but full of hope by which we can discover something new.
