নেহেরু গান্ধী পরিবারের সদস্যা নয়নতারা সেহগাল হলেন একজন বিখ্যাত ভারতীয় লেখিকা। তিনি ১৯৮৬ সালে তাঁর উপন্যাস “রিচ লাইক আস” এর জন্য সাহিত্য অ্যাকাডেমি পুরস্কার লাভ করেছিলেন। তিনি সেই সময়কার এক অন্যতম লেখিকা যিনি ইংরাজিতে সাহিত্য চর্চা করে বিপুল খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছিলেন।
Summary of Passing Away of Bapu
Unit 1
The author started the text with her memory of 30th January, 1948 when she was having tea at home. She was called to Birla house . Gandhiji had been shot. The author was shocked. At the Birla house Gandhiji’s relatives and followers had gathered. There was silence in the room. The news of his death spreaded very fast.
People gathered around Birla House. Everyone was sad but they did not make a sound. There was an unnatural silence. People were stunned to speak in the beginning. Later they were shouting and crying wildly. They were restless. It was announced that they would be allowed to see Gandhiji before funeral. The many mourning people were thinking that they are feeling helpless as their most loved one has passed. They were looking like children. The author was also thinking the same.
They all listened to the broadcast telling the people of India that their Bapu was no more.

দিনটা ছিলো ১৯৪৮ সালের ৩০ জানুয়ারী , লেখিকা তখন তাঁর বাড়িতে চা পানে মগ্ন। হঠাৎ তাঁকে বিড়লা হাউসে ডেকে পাঠানো হল, তিনি জানতে পারলেন গান্ধীজি গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়েছেন।লেখিকা এই খবর শুনে বিস্ময়ে হতবাক হয়ে গেলেন।
বিড়লা হাউসে একে একে গান্ধীজির সমস্ত আত্মীয় পরিজন এবং অনুরাগীরা জমায়েত হতে শুরু করলেন। ঘর সম্পূর্ণ স্তব্ধ। গান্ধীজির মৃত্যর খবর খুব দ্রুত চারিদিকে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। বিড়লা হাউসের চারপাশে প্রচুর মানুষ সমবেত হয়েছিলেন। সবাই শোকে মুহ্যমান। এক অদ্ভুত নীরবতা বিরাজমান। সবাই এই ঘটনার আকস্মিকতায় হতবাক। ধীরে ধীরে তারা ঘটনার গুরুত্ব উপলদ্ধি করতেই, উঠল কান্নার রোল। অনেকেই অস্থির হয়ে পড়লেন। ঘোষণা করা হলো গান্ধীজিকে সৎকারের আগে সকলেই তাঁকে শেষবার দেখার সুযোগ পাবেন।
তাদের সবচেয়ে আপন মানুষটা আর নেই। গল্পের লেখিকাকেও ওই একই ভাবনা গ্রাস করছিল। আর তখনই সকলের উদ্দেশ্যে ঘোষিত হল তাদের বাপুর চিরবিদায় সংবাদ।
Unit 2
Gandhiji’s funeral was to take place the day after his death. People gathered at the route of the funeral procession. Padmasi, Mrs. Naidu’s daughter said that they will walk. It was the last of their walk with Gandhiji. They were all in pain. Bapu lay on an open truck covered with flowers. Thousands of people wept, trying to touch Bapu’s feet. It was the funeral procession of India’s beloved leader.
The author was walking with the people who were the admirers of Bapu. They could not accepted that Bapu was no more then. Once Bapu walked over a large part of India with his walking stick and walk was the only way open to the average Indian. Gandhiji took this and transformed this ordinary thing into a joyful effort.

গান্ধীজির মৃত্যুর পরের দিনটি তাঁর সৎকারের জন্য ধার্য হয়েছিলো। সৎকার যাত্রায় সমস্ত মানুষ জড়ো হলেন। এমনকি পদ্মশ্রী শ্রীমতী নাইডুর মেয়েও হাঁটবেন স্থির হল। গান্ধীজির সাথে শেষবারের জন্য পা মেলাতে সকলে সমবেত হলেন। তাঁরা সকলেই শোকে কাতর। বাপুকে একটি খোলা ট্রাকের ওপরে শুইয়ে ফুলে ভরিয়ে দেওয়া হলো। হাজার হাজার মানুষ কাঁদছেন, একবার তারা তাদের বাপুর পা ছুঁতে চাইছেন।
ভারতবর্ষের স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনের সবথেকে জনপ্রিয় নায়কের শবযাত্রা শুরু হলো। লেখিকাও গান্ধীজির অনুগামীদের সাথে পা মেলালেন। তাঁরা মেনে নিয়েছেন যে তাঁদের বাপু আর নেই। বাপু তাঁর লাঠি নিয়ে ভারতবর্ষের এক বিস্তীর্ণ অংশে একসময় হেঁটে হেঁটে যাত্রা করেছেন। কিন্তু এবারের এই যাত্রায় বাপুর সাথে পা মেলানোই ছিলো একজন সাধারণ ভারতবাসীর কাছে বাপুর সাথে পথ চলার একমাত্র উপায়। গান্ধীজির নেতৃত্বেই হাঁটার মতো সাধারণ জিনিস সে যুগে অনেক বড় মাধ্যম হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পেয়েছিল।

Unit 3
Some days after the funeral, a special train took Gandhiji’s ashes to Allahabad. The compartment was decorated with flowers. People were singing bhajans. They could feel the presence of Gandhiji amid the flowers and the songs. The ashes were immersed in the Ganges. After that they all went back to Delhi.
The author and her sister never worked for freedom with Gandhiji, but they were also in complete loss. She had grown under the shelter of Bapu and his passing away left her unprotected. She encouraged herself by the thought and deeds of Bapu. The followers of Bapu were still there, strong and proud to bear his banner. Bapu has passed away but his India would continue to live in his children.

সৎকারের কিছুদিন পরে একটা বিশেষ ট্রেনে গান্ধীজির অস্থিভস্ম এলাহাবাদের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হল। ট্রেনের কামরা ফুল দিয়ে সাজানো হল, জনগন সমবেতভাবে ভজন গাইতে শুরু করলেন। তাঁরা সেই ফুল এবং গানের মধ্যে দিয়েই গান্ধীজিকে তাদের মধ্যে অনুভব করেছিলেন। সেই অস্থিভস্ম গঙ্গায় ভাসান দেওয়া হলো। এরপর সবাই দিল্লি ফিরে গেলেন।
লেখিকা এবং তাঁর বোন কখনোই গান্ধীজির সাথে স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনে যোগদান করেননি, কিন্তু তাঁরাও সম্পূর্ণভাবে শোকস্তব্ধ। তিনি গান্ধীজির আশ্রয়ে বড়। এই মৃত্যু তাঁকে আশ্রয়হীন করে দিল। তিনি বাপুর কাজ ও চিন্তাভাবনায় নিজেকে উদ্বুদ্ধ করেছিলেন। বাপু নেই কিন্তু তাঁর অনুরাগীরা বর্তমান এবং তাঁরাই বাপুর চিন্তাধারাকে গর্বের সাথে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাবে। বাপু চিরবিদায় নিলেন কিন্তু তাঁর দেশ ভারতবর্ষ ও তাঁর সন্তানসম অনুরাগীদের মধ্যে তিনি আজীবন অমর হয়ে থাকবেন
