A brief introduction to the author
Ray Douglas Bradbury (August 22, 1920 – June 5, 2012) was an American author and screenwriter. He worked in a variety of genres including fantasy, science fiction, horror, and mystery fiction. Bradbury was mainly known for his novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and his science fiction and horror story collections The Martian Chronicles (1950), The Illustrated Man (1951), and I Sing the Body Electric (1969). Most of his best known work is in fantasy fiction, but he also wrote in other genres. The New York Times called Bradbury “the writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream”.
Summary of All Summer In A Day:
The text is an excerpt from a work of science fiction set in an elementary school on the planet Venus. The children, mostly around nine years old, stays on the planet Venus,where the sun shines for only an hour once every seven years.
The story opens on the day that the sun is due to make its appearance once again. At the beginning of the story, the small children are first compared to roses and weeds, intermingled, looking out a window. They are anxious for a glimpse at the sun that has not been out on Venus for seven years. They didn’t remember any memories with the sun. From the class all day the children’s learned about the sun. They learned about how it resembled a lemon and how hot was the sun as they hardly remember about the sun.

They are very excited because the sun only comes out once every seven years. The children were unable to remember the sun as the sun had appeared last seven years ago only for an hour. From then it was raining continuously. They were very excited about the appearance of the sun finally after seven years. As it rains all day long, the planet is covered with thick jungles and unruly weeds, perpetually caught in a cycle of growth and destruction.
After the sun came out, the childrens lay out laughing on the jungle mattress, they played hide and seek, took all that they can consume from the sum and ran for one hour with joy.
After an hour, a giant drop of rain fell from the sky. The happiness of the childrens came to an end as the rain came back. They returned to their underground houses. It was raining steadily outside and they were sad as they have to wait for another seven years to witness the sun again.

লেখকের কল্পনার মোড়কে শুক্রগ্রহের একটি বিশেষ দিনের ঘটনা সমগ্র গল্প জুড়ে বর্ণিত হয়েছে। এ এক এমন গ্রহ যেখানে প্রতি বৃষ্টিস্নাত সাত বছর বাদে মাত্র একদিনের জন্য সূর্য উদিত হয়, তাও মাত্র এক ঘণ্টার জন্যই! গল্প অনুযায়ী বহুকাল আগে পৃথিবী থেকে কিছু মানুষ শুক্রগ্রহে আসেন এবং তারা সভ্যতা গড়ে তোলেন। এই গ্রহে যে সব শিশুরা রয়েছে তারা প্রত্যেকেই নয় বছর বয়সী। তাই তারা যখন শেষবারের জন্য সূর্যকে দেখেছিল, তখন তারা নিতান্তই শিশু। তাই খুব স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তাদের সে দৃশ্য মনে নেই। তারা সূর্যকে চিনেছে শুধুমাত্র বইয়ের পাতার মাধ্যমে। তাই এই শিশুদের সূর্যকে চাক্ষুষ দেখার বাসনাও প্রবল।
আশ্চর্যভাবে আজই সেই বিশেষ দিন যেদিন সাতবছরের ঘুম ভেঙ্গে সূর্যের এক ঘণ্টার জন্য জেগে ওঠার কথা। তাই আজ শিশুরা অত্যন্ত উত্তেজিত। সকলেই আকাশ দিকে চেয়ে। ঠিক এমনই সময় বৃষ্টি থেমে গেল। হ্যাঁ সপ্তবর্ষব্যাপী বৃষ্টি বিরতি নিল।
যেন এক উন্মত্ত হ্যারিকেন ঝড় থেমে গেল। [হ্যারিকেন একপ্রকার বিধ্বংসী ঘূর্ণিঝড়] যেন সমগ্র গ্রহ এক লহমায় থেমে গেল। চারিদিকের এক নাগাড়ে হয়ে চলা বৃষ্টির শব্দ হঠাৎ থেমে গেল।
আর তারই সাথে সাথে সকলকে চমকে দিয়ে সূর্য আত্মপ্রকাশ করল।
এ যেন এক জ্বলন্ত ব্রোঞ্জের আগুনের গোলা। সূর্য ওঠার সাথে সাথে সমগ্র গ্রহ জুড়ে ছড়িয়ে থাকা জঙ্গল আলোয় উজ্জ্বল হয়ে উঠলো। আর সাত বছর ধরে অপেক্ষামান শিশুরা বেড়িয়ে পড়লো তাদের এক ঘণ্টার “গ্রীষ্মকে” সম্পূর্ণভাবে উপভোগ করতে।সূর্যের আলোকে সারা দেহে জড়িয়ে নিতে তাদের পরিধিত জ্যাকেটকে উন্মুক্ত করে দিল তারা। মেখে নিল সূর্যের সোনার আভাকে। সূর্যের অভাবে ধূসর গাঢ় জঙ্গলেই তারা হেসে খেলে বেড়াতে লাগলো।
কিছু কিছু শিশু আবার চোখ থেকে জল বেড়িয়ে না আসা পর্যন্ত এক নাগাড়ে সূর্যকে দেখতে লাগলো। যেমন বন্দীদশা থেকে ছাড়া পেয়ে জংলী প্রাণীরা আনন্দে উন্মত্ত হয়ে যায়, তেমনি এই শিশুগুলির কাছেও আজকের শান্ত শব্দহীন এই এক ঘণ্টা এক অভূতপূর্ব অনুভুতি দিয়েছিল। কিন্তু এই আনন্দের মধ্যেই একটি ছোট্ট মেয়ে হঠাৎ চিৎকার করে উঠলো। সে তার হাতের তালুতে পড়া বৃষ্টির একটি ফোঁটাকে সকলকে দেখাল।
মেয়েটি কাঁদতে শুরু করল, বাকিরাও আকাশের দিকে চেয়ে দেখল সূর্য মেঘের আড়ালে ধীরে ধীরে মুখ লুকোচ্ছে, তাদের দেহেও বৃষ্টির ফোঁটা পড়তে শুরু করল। দিগবিদিক কাঁপানো বজ্রপাতের শব্দ গোটা গ্রহকে অন্ধকারে, হতাশায় আবার আছন্ন করল, তারাও দ্রুত তাদের মাটির তলার বাড়িতে ফিরে এল। শুরু হল আবার সেই সপ্তবর্ষব্যাপী বৃষ্টি। তারা সকলে নিরাশ বিষণ্ণ চিত্তে জানলা দিয়ে অবিরাম বৃষ্টির ধারা আগামী সাত বছরের জন্য আবার দেখতে শুরু করল।
