দ্য স্নেল- এর লেখক পরিচিতি
William Cowper was one of the most popular poets of his times. He was a renowned 18th century poet and a translator of Homer. He introduced the style to write about the everyday lives of the countryside people in poetry. His most famous work is the 5000 lines poem “The Task” and also “Olney Hymns”. His phrases like “Variety is the spice of life” are still popular today. His work found a wide audience. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him “The best modern poet”.

এই কবিতায় কবি একটি শামুককে খুব মন দিয়ে পর্যবেক্ষণ করেছেন। এর খোলস, যেটি কিনা এর নিজের বাড়ি সেটি সমেতই শামুকটি বেড়ে ওঠে। ফুল, পাতা, ঘাস, দেওয়াল এইসবের ওপরে এটা খুব সহজেই আটকে থাকে, কখনোই সেখান থেকে পড়ে যায় না। দেখে মনে হয় যে শামুকটি যেন ওই জায়গাগুলো থেকেই জন্মেছে। সে তার নিজের খোলসের ভেতর খুব নিরাপদ বোধ করে। যখনি সে কোনো বিপদ অনুভব করে বা বুঝতে পারে যে বাইরের আবহাওয়া খারাপ তখনি সে খোলসের ভেতর লুকিয়ে যায়। কেউ যদি তার মাথার ওপরের শিংদুটো আলতো করেও ছুঁয়ে ফেলে তাহলে সে তৎক্ষনাৎ তার খোলসের ভেতর লুকিয়ে যায়।
সে একদমই কারোর ছোঁয়া পছন্দ করে না। সে যেখানে থাকে একা থাকে। তার কোনো বন্ধু বা আত্মীয় নেই। সে নিজেই হল তার সম্পূর্ণ জগৎ এবং সে এতে খুব খুশি। তার খোলস, যেটা কিনা তার বাড়ি, সেটাই হল তার একমাত্র সম্পদ, কারন সেটাই তার জীবন রক্ষা করে।

The snail sticks close to grass, or leaf, or a fruit, or a wall and it has no fear to fall.
It looks like he has grew there with his house. It seems as if he was born from the grass or leaf or fruit or wall.
Within that house secure he hides
When danger imminent betides
Of storm, or other harm besides
Of Weather.
The snail hides in his house which is his shell. When he feels any danger. Also in the times of bad weather like storm, the snail hides in his shell for his own protection.
Give but his horns the slightest touch
His self— collecting pow’r is such
He shrinks into his house with much
Displeasure
You just touch its horns slightly, you will see his power of withdrawing himself. He shrinks into his shell, because he dislikes to be touched.
Where’er he dwells, he dwells alone
Except himself has chatells none
Well satisfied to be his own
Whole treasure
The snail lives alone. He has no other friends or relatives. He has no personal belongings without himself and his own shell. He is satisfied with his self-sufficient life and it the treasure to him.
The snail -Summary
In this poem the poet is closely observing the snail. It grew with its house and that is his shell. It easily sticks to the grass, or fruits, or wall and it has no fear to fall as if the snail grew from that object. It looks like that the snail with his house was born from those objects. He feels protected in his shells.

If he feels any danger or if the weather is bad, if there is any sign of danger the snail can understand it and he hides in his shell. If someone touches his horns slightly it shrinks under its shell and he doesn’t like to be touched. Where he lives he lives alone. Except himself he has no other friends or relatives. His world is surrounded by himself and he is satisfied with his lonely life. He is fond of this loneliness. His house, i.e his shell is his treasure. He spends his self sufficient life in his shell and all he has his life, which is protected by his shell and that’s why it is a treasure to him.
