গল্পের লেখক সুগত বসু হলেন একাধারে একজন বিখ্যাত ঐতিহাসিক ও লেখক।তিনি হাভার্ড ইউনিভার্সিটিতে বর্তমানে ওসেনিক হিস্ট্রির একজন খ্যাতনামা অধ্যাপক হিসাবে কর্মরত। তবে তার আরও একটি বিশেষ পরিচয় রয়েছে। তিনি নেতাজি সুভাষ চন্দ্র বসুর দাদা শরৎ চন্দ্র বসুর নাতি। ২০১১ সালে তাঁর বিখ্যাত বই “হিজ ম্যাজেস্টিস অপনেন্ট” প্রকাশিত হয়।

নেতাজি সুভাষ চন্দ্র বসু (জন্ম ২৩সে জানুয়ারি, ১৮৯৭) হলেন ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামীদের মধ্যে অন্যতম উজ্জ্বল নক্ষত্র যিনি আমৃত্যু ভারতের স্বাধীনতার জন্যে লড়াই করেছিলেন।এই উদ্যেশে তিনি আজাদ হিন্দফৌজ (INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY) নামক সেনাবাহিনী গঠন করেছিলেন, যাতে একটি মহিলা বাহিনীও অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল। ১৯৪১ সালে সুভাষকে ব্রিটিশবিরোধী কার্যকলাপের জন্যে ঘরবন্দী করে রাখা হয়েছিল। স্বাধীনতা আন্দোলনকারী কার্যকলাপ চালিয়ে যেতে ব্রিটিশদের হাত থেকে কিভাবে সুভাষ ছদ্মবেশে পালিয়ে ছিলেন তারই রোমহর্ষক বিবরণ এই আখ্যানে দেওয়া হয়েছে।
ডিসেম্বর মাসের এক বিকেলে কাকার সাথে দেখা করতে গিয়ে শিশির দেখেন, ক্লান্ত পরিশ্রান্ত সুভাষ বিছানায় হেলান দিয়ে বসে আছেন। শিশিরকে দেখেই তাকে বিছানায় বসতে বলেন নেতাজি।
অসুস্থ কাকাকে দেখতে আসা আপাতদৃষ্টিতে স্বাভাবিক মনে হলেও শিশিরের কিন্তু অন্য উদ্দেশ্য ছিল। তিনি কাকার কাছে যেতেন মূলত রেডিও শোনাতে যাতে সুভাষ বিদেশি বেতারবার্তা শুনতে পারেন। সুভাষ তাঁকে জিজ্ঞেসা করলেন যে, শিশির তার একটি কাজ করে দিতে পারবে কিনা।
কাজটি কিন্তু ছিল বেশ কঠিন!
পুলিশের নজরবন্দী সুভাষকে প্রহরীদের নজর এড়িয়ে গাড়ি করে গভীর রাতে কলকাতার বাইরের এক স্টেশনে নিয়ে যেতে হবে। নেতাজী দেশ ছেড়ে পালাতে চান আর সেই কাজেই তিনি শিশিরের সাহায্য চান। কথাবার্তা শেষ হতে ভিতরে এক চাপা উত্তেজনা নিয়ে শিশির বাড়ি ফিরলেন। এদিকে পুলিশ সুভাষের বাড়ির চারপাশে সবসময় রয়েছে। অনেক পরিকল্পনার পর কাকা- ভাইপো সিদ্ধান্ত নেন যে গভীর রাতে মূল দরজা দিয়েই তারা শিশিরের জার্মান গাড়ি “ওয়ান্ডারার”-এ চেপে বেরিয়ে যাবেন।
তার পরিকল্পনায় সাহায্যার্থে সুভাষ উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্তের দায়িত্বে থাকা আরেক স্বাধীনতাসংগ্রামী আকবরশাহ-কে খবর দিয়েছিলেন কলকাতায় আসার জন্যে। কলকাতায় এসে শাহ শিশিরের সাথে মধ্য-কলকাতায় যান সুভাষের ছদ্মবেশ-এর জন্যে জিনিসপত্র কিনতে। শিশির সুভাষের ট্রেন যাত্রার জন্যে একটি ব্রিফকেস, একটি গোটানো বিছানা ,কিছু বালিশ এবং পোশাকও কিনেছিলেন।তার পাশাপাশি, তিনি সুভাষের ছদ্মবেশের জন্যে কিছু ভুয়ো পরিচয়পত্র বানিয়েছিলেন যাতে লেখা ছিল,
“মহম্মদ জিয়াউদ্দিন, ভ্রমণ পরিদর্শক, এম্পেরেওর অফ ইন্ডিয়া লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্স কো লিমিটেড”
১৬ই জানুয়ারি ১৯৪১, শিশির ৮.৩০র সময় গাড়ি নিয়ে বেরলেন এলগিন রোডের উদ্দেশ্যে।সুভাষের ভাই দ্বিজেন ও তাঁর এক ভাইঝি ইলা বাদে তাদের পরিবারের কেউই এই অভিযানের কথা জানতো না। সুভাষও ততক্ষনে বাদামি কোট, সালওয়ার, ফেজটুপি ও চশমা পরে মহম্মদ জিয়াউদ্দিনের ছদ্মবেশ ধারণ করে ফেলেছেন। রাত ১.৩৫ বাজতেই দ্বিজেন ওপরতলার জানালা থেকে তাদের সংকেত দিলেন যে আশেপাশে কোনো কর্তব্যরত পুলিশ নেই, রাস্তাও ফাঁকা। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সুভাষ ও শিশির বাড়ির দালান দিয়ে পা টিপে টিপে পেছনের সিড়ি দিয়ে গাড়ীর কাছে পৌঁছে গেলেন।
সুভাষের ঘরের আলো তখনও জ্বলছে যাতে সবাই বোঝে যে তিনি ঘরবন্দী-ই আছেন। সুভাষকে পেছনে বসিয়ে শিশির চরম বেগে গাড়ি ছুটিয়ে ৩৮/২ এলগীন রোড ছাড়িয়ে গভীর রাতের ঘুমন্ত কলকাতার সীমানা পেরিয়ে গেলেন। মাঝরাস্তায় গাড়ীর ইঞ্জিন খারাপ হওয়ায় দুজনেই কিছুক্ষণের জন্যে চিন্তায় পড়ে যান। তবে খুব দ্রুতই ইঞ্জিন ঠিক হয়।
বিদায়বেলায় শিশিরকে ফিরে যেতে বলে সুভাষ রেলওয়ে সেতু পেরিয়ে রাজকীয় ভঙ্গিতে এগিয়ে চলেন বিপরীত দিকের প্ল্যাটফর্মের দিকে এবং অতঃপর অন্ধকারে যেনো হঠাৎ অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেলেন। দিল্লী-কালকা মেল ছাড়লো। শিশির স্টেশনে দাঁড়িয়ে ট্রেনের আলোগুলোকে ক্রমশ দূরে সরে যেতে দেখলেন, তার কানে তখনও একভাবে বেজে চলেছে ট্রেনের চাকার ঘড়ঘড় শব্দ।

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (born 23 January 1897), was one of the most famous freedom fighters who fought for India’s independence against the British rule. For the said purpose, he formed the Indian National Army (INA) including a women’s regiment. In 1941,Subhas was kept in house-arrest by the British Government for his anti-British nationalist activities. The following tale is about the exhilarating escape of Subhas from the clutches of the British to continue his fight for India’s independence.

One December afternoon when Sisir went to visit his uncle, he saw a tired and disheveled-looking Subhas reclining on his pillow. Making Sisir sit on his bed, Subhas looked intensely at him and asked if he can do something. The task for Sisir was to drive his uncle to a railway station far from Kolkata at the dead of the night. Upon hearing that he would have to help his uncle escape from India, Sisir went back to his house, at 1 Woodburn Park, in a state of frenzy and excitement. But police was guarding Subhas’s house all the time. Though it was normal for a nephew to visit his ailing uncle, Sisir had other motives too. He often operated the radio and helped Subhas listen to foreign broadcasts. After discussing various plans of escape, they finally decided to drive out through the main gate using Sisir’s German car called The Wanderer.
Subhas had called Akbar Shah, a fellow freedom fighter who operated in the north-western frontier provinces, to come to Kolkata to successfully execute Subhas’s plan. Shah upon coming to Kolkata went to central-kolkata first with Sisir to shop items for Subhas’s disguise. Sisir also purchased a briefcase, a bedroll, some pillows and shirts too for Subhas’s train journey.He ordered a set of calling cards for Subhas’s fake identity ,which read
“Muhammad Ziauddin, travelling inspector, the Empire of India Life Insurance Co. Ltd.”
On 16th January,1941, Sisir left for Elgin Road with his car at 8.30 PM. Except for his cousin Dwijen and niece Ila,none of Subhas’s family members knew about their mission. Subhas by then had changed into his disguise as Muhammad Ziauddin, dressed in baggy shalwar, black fez and glasses. By 1.35 AM, Dwijen signalled from the upstairs window that no policeman was nearby around Subhas’s house who usually marched around by the day.
Subhas and Sisir hugged the inner wall of the house-corridor and tiptoed down the back stairs to the car. The light in Subhas’s bedroom glowed to give the impression that he was at home. With Subhas at the backseat, Sisir drove out and went beyond Kolkata’s precincts as the city slept. They shared coffee in the meantime to ease up. On the way, the car engine faltered once, making them anxious for a few moments. After sometime the engine started again, Sisir dashed at high speed through the night and reached Bararee, near Dhanbad at 8.30 AM. They stayed at Sisir’s brother Ashok’s place where Subhas kept his disguise as Ziauddin and said that he had come on insurance business. After having an early dinner, Subhas left alone for Gomoh station to catch the Delhi-Kalka Mail. Later Sisir gave him lift in his car and reached the station in the moonlit night.
Asking Sisir to go back as his parting words, Subhas walked towards the platform of the opposite side majestically and disappeared into the darkness. As the Delhi-Kalka Mail released steam, Sisir stood there watching the train leave.
