A brief introduction to the author

Alfred George Gardiner (2 June — 3 March, 1946), was an English journalist, editor and author. His essays, which he wrote under his pen name, “Alpha of the Plough”, were highly celebrated. He was born in Chelmsford. He taught us the basic truths of life in an amusing manner and it was his uniqueness as an essayist. “Pillars of Society”, “Pebbles on the Shore”, “Many Furrows”, “Leaves in the Wind” are his best-known works.

Summary of ‘All about a dog’

A.G.Gardiner described an incident at the time of his bus journey. The story is narrated in first person. Two women and a man got into the bus. The younger woman was carrying a Pekinese dog. The conductor saw the “beady–eyed” dog, when he came to collect their fares.

The narrator could feel a trouble, as he understood that the conductor was a that kind of person, who had a general vague grievance about everything, especially against passengers who sat in his bus. It was because he shivered every time when the door was opened. The conductor started argument with the lady and the reason was the dog. He was ordering to take the dog out or go to the top of the bus. It was a bitterly cold night and the lady rejected to go to the top of the bus. Her companions also supported her.

The conductor pulled the bell to stop the bus. He told the lady that the bus would not move until the dog was brought out. He had the law on his side. The passengers started disliking the conductor for his rude and stubborn behaviour. Some wanted to call the police and some wanted their fare back.

Two or three passengers left the bus. A policeman came and the passengers started protesting. The policeman supported the conductor, as he was abiding by the rule. The bus was emptying.

At last, the lady agreed to go to the top of the bus. The conductor pulled the bell and the bus started. Though it was his triumph, he was criticized by the passengers.

Then there was an engine trouble occurred and the conductor went to help the driver. In the meantime, the lady re–entered the bus. The conductor came back when the problem was solved and then he saw the dog and again the bus stopped. The lady again went to the top of the bus after denying.

The bus was empty and the narrator was the last passenger. The conductor was trying to justify himself to the narrator.

The narrator advised the conductor, that the rule of the road is hard and first, as because it is for saving life. When it came to the rules for guidance, we should not break the spirit of the rule. Here the rule was set up for the comfort of the passengers and he broke it. He should mind the rules with good will and good temper.

The conductor took it very well and bade him “Good Night”.

বাংলায় আলোচনা

লেখক এই গল্পে তাঁর বাস যাত্রার একটা দিনের কথা বলেছেন।

তিনি কোন এক শীতের রাতে বাস সফর করছিলেন, সেই বাসে দু’জন মহিলা এবং একজন পুরুষ ওই বাসটিতে উঠেছিলেন। কমবয়সী মহিলাটির কোলে একটি পিকেনিস কুকুর ছিল। বাসের কন্ডাকটর যখন তাদের ভাড়া নিতে এসেছিলেন তখন তিনি সেই ছোট্ট ছোট্ট চোখের কুকুরটাকে দেখেছিলেন। লেখক বুঝতে পারছিলেন যে একটা সমস্যা আসতে চলেছে, কারণ এই কন্ডাকটর এমন ধরনেরই মানুষ ছিলেন যে তাঁর পৃথিবীর সবকিছুর প্রতিই একটা বিরক্তি ও রাগ ছিল, বিশেষ করে বাসের যাত্রীদের ওপর, যারা বাসের ভেতর বসেছিলেন। এর কারন সম্ভবত যতবার বাসের দরজা খুলছিল, ততবার ঠান্ডা হাওয়ায় কন্ডাকটর কেঁপে উঠছিলেন।

কন্ডাকটরটি সেই মহিলার সাথে বাগবিতণ্ডা শুরু করে দেন এবং তার কারন ছিল ওই কুকুরটা। তিনি বারবার বলছিলেন যে কুকুরটাকে বাসের বাইরে বের করে দিতে হবে, অথবা মহিলাটিকে তাকে নিয়ে বাসের ছাদের সিটে উঠে যেতে হবে (প্রসঙ্গত ঐ বাসটি একটি দোতলা বাস ছিল)। সেই রাতটা ভয়ংকর ঠান্ডা ছিল এবং সেই মহিলাটি জানিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন, যে তিনি ওপরে যাবেন না। তাঁর সঙ্গীরাও তাঁকেই সমর্থন করছিলেন।

এদিকে কন্ডাকটর নাছোড়বান্দা, তিনি বাসের ঘন্টি টেনে বাস থামিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। তিনি সেই মহিলাটিকে বলে দিয়েছিলেন যে যতক্ষন না কুকুরটিকে বাসের বাইরে নিয়ে যাওয়া হচ্ছে, ততক্ষন বাস ছাড়বে না। ঘটনাক্রমে এই ব্যাপারে আইন কন্ডাকটরের পক্ষেই ছিল। কন্ডাকটরের এই রুক্ষ ও জেদী ব্যবহারের জন্য বাসের যাত্রীরা তাঁকে অপছন্দ করতে শুরু করেছিলেন। কেউ কেউ পুলিশকে ডাকতে চাইছিলেন এবং কেউ কেউ তাঁদের ভাড়া ফেরত চাইছিলেন। কন্ডাকটর কোনো ভাবেই ভাড়া ফেরত দিতে রাজি ছিলেন না।

দু–তিন জন এর মধ্যে বাস থেকে নেমেও গেলেন। এমন সময়ে একজন পুলিশ অফিসার সেখানে উপস্থিত হলেন এবং যাত্রীরা তাঁর কাছে এই ব্যাপারে অভিযোগ ও অনুরোধ করতে শুরু করেছিলেন। পুলিশটি কন্ডাকটরকেই সমর্থন করলেন, কারন কন্ডাকটর নিয়ম মেনে কাজ করছিলেন। বাস আস্তে আস্তে ফাঁকা হচ্ছিল।

অবশেষে মহিলাটি কুকুরটিকে নিয়ে বাসের ওপরের সিটে যেতে বাধ্য হলেন, কারণ তার হাতে এই কাজ ভিন্ন আর কোন উপায় ছিল না। খুশি মনে কন্ডাকটর তখন বাসের ঘন্টি বাজিয়েছিলেন এবং বাসটি চলতে শুরু করেছিল। যদিও এই ঘটনায় কন্ডাকটর জিতে গিয়েছিলেন কিন্তু বাসের যাত্রীরা তাঁর ওপর অসন্তুষ্ট হয়ে তাঁর সামনেই তাঁর সমালোচনা করা শুরু করেছিলেন।

এরপরই বাসের ইঞ্জিনে একটা সমস্যা দেখা দেয় এবং কন্ডাকটর বাসের ড্রাইভারকে সাহায্য করতে চলে গিয়েছিলেন। এই সময়ের মধ্যে সেই মহিলাটি কুকুরটিকে কোলে নিয়ে আবার বাসের ভেতর এসে বসেছিলেন। ইঞ্জিনের সমস্যা মিটে গেলে কন্ডাকটর আবার ফিরে এসেছিলেন এবং কুকুরটিকে দেখে সাথে সাথেই বাস থামিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। অনেক বাগবিতণ্ডার পর আবার সেই মহিলাটি বাসের ওপরের সিটে গিয়ে বসেছিলেন।

ইতিমধ্যে বাস ফাঁকা হয়ে গিয়েছিল। লেখকই ঐ বাসের শেষ যাত্রী ছিলেন এবং কন্ডাকটর লেখকের কাছে নিজের ব্যবহারের সপক্ষে সওয়াল করে বোঝাতে চাইছিলেন যে তিনি যা করেছেন, তা ঠিকই করেছেন। লেখক তখন কন্ডাকটরকে কিছু উপদেশ দিয়েছিলেন।

তিনি বলেছিলেন যে কিছু কিছু নিয়ম খুব কঠোর হওয়া উচিৎ যেমন রাস্তায় চলাফেরার নিয়ম, কারন এটার ওপর জীবন মরন নির্ভর করছে। কিন্তু কিছু নিয়ম আছে, যেখানে সেই নিয়ম তৈরির পিছনে আসল কারনটাকে বেশি গুরুত্ব দিতে হয়। যেমন এই ক্ষেত্রে নিয়ম তৈরি করা হয়েছিল, বাসের যাত্রীদের আরাম ও সুবিধার জন্য, কিন্তু কন্ডাকটর সেটাকেই ভেঙে ফেলেছেন, তাঁর ব্যবহারে যাত্রীরাই অসন্তুষ্ট হয়েছেন। কন্ডাকটরের উচিৎ ভালো ব্যবহার ও সদিচ্ছার সাথে নিয়মের পালন করা।

কন্ডাকটর লেখকের এই উপদেশ খুব ভালোভাবে নিয়েছিলেন এবং লেখক বাস থেকে নেমে যাওয়ার সময় তাঁকে “শুভরাত্রি” জানিয়েছিলেন।
