Mulk Raj Anand (1905–2004) was a pioneer in Indian writing in English. He gained international fame. His novels like “Coolie”, “ Untouchable” show the social stigma and evil which were perpetuated in the name of tradition and religion. His other short stories are also the showcase of the suffering of colonized India. Apart from the British colonization we were also colonized by our own social evils. Mulk Raj Anand received “International Peace Prize” and also was awarded by “Sahitya Academy Award”, “Padma Bhushan”.

লেখক ফৈজাবাদ থেকে লখনোউ ফিরছিলেন। তিনি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের আগেই স্টেশনে পৌঁছে গিয়েছিলেন। সেখানে বসে বসে তিনি বানরদের দেখছিলেন। তারা গাছে এবং উন্মুক্ত স্টেশনে খেলা করে বেড়াচ্ছিল। তারা খাবার খুঁজছিল এবং যে কোনো খাদ্যদ্রব্য দেখলেই ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ার জন্য প্রস্তুত ছিল।
এমন সময় ট্রেন আসার ঘোষণা হল এবং সশব্দে ট্রেন স্টেশনে এসে পৌঁছালো। লেখক জানলার ধারে একটা বসার জায়গা পেলেন। গ্রীষ্মের প্রচন্ড গরমে সবাই ঘামছিলেন। লেখক বসে বসে সেই বানরদের তখনও দেখছিলেন। তাদের ভেতর একজন এক সাধুবাবার কৌপিন নিয়ে পালিয়ে গিয়েছিল, যখন তিনি স্নান করছিলেন। যদিও পরে সাধুবাবার অনুরোধে বানরটি তার কৌপিন ফিরিয়ে দেয়।

এমন সময় সাদা ধুতি, ঢিলেঢালা পোশাক ও সুতোর কাজ করা টুপি পরে এক ভদ্রলোক কামরায় প্রবেশ করলেন। তাঁকে দেখে একজন ব্যবসায়ী বলে মনে হচ্ছিল। একজন কুলি তাঁর সমস্ত জিনিস বহন করছিলেন। হঠাৎ করেই একটা বানর তাঁর সুন্দর সুতোর কাজ করা টুপিটা ছিনিয়ে নেয়। ভদ্রলোক অস্বস্তিতে পড়ে যান এবং বানরের ওপর চিৎকার করতে থাকেন। তাঁর সারা মুখ ঘেমে উঠেছিল। তিনি ছুটে গেলেন গাছটার দিকে। তিনি যত চিৎকার করছিলেন বানরটা ততই দূরে সরে যাচ্ছিল। লেখক খেয়াল করলেন এটা সেই একই বানর যে সাধুবাবার কৌপিন চুরি করেছিল।
এর মাঝে একজন ফল বিক্রেতা কামরায় প্রবেশ করেন। তিনি শেঠজিকে তিনি তাঁর টুপিটা উদ্ধার করে আনতে পারবেন বলে আস্বস্ত করেন। এবার তিনি ডান হাতে কয়েকটা কলা নিয়ে বানরটিকে লোভ দেখাতে শুরু করলেন আর তার বাঁহাতটা বাড়িয়ে দিলেন এবং এইভাবে বানিরটিকে রাজি করাতে থাকলেন টুপিটা ফেরত দেওয়ার জন্য।
ফল বিক্রেতাটিও বানরটিকে বোঝানোর চেষ্টা করছিলেন। বানরটি খুব সাবধানে ফল বিক্রেতার কাছাকাছি একটা গাছের ডালে এসে নেমেছিল। সমস্ত প্লাটফর্ম নিশ্চুপ হয়ে গিয়েছিল।
বানরটি খুব সাবধানে প্রথমে কলাগুলো নিল তার ডানহাত বাড়িয়ে তারপর বাঁহাতে ধরে থাকা টুপিটা ছেড়ে দিল।
সমস্ত যাত্রীরা ফল বিক্রেতার প্রশংসা করে উঠলেন। তিনি টুপিটা শেঠজিকে ফিরিয়ে দিয়ে বললেন যে এই বানরগুলো খুব ক্ষুধার্ত থাকে, তাই তারা যাত্রীদের বিরক্ত করে। এরপরেই শেঠজি নিজের টুপিটা নিয়ে কামরার উদ্দেশ্য রওনা হলেন। ফল বিক্রেতা এরপর শেঠজির কাছে কলার দামস্বরুপ দুআনা চাইলেন, কিন্তু তাতে শেঠজি খুব বিরক্তি নিয়ে ফল বিক্রেতার ওপর চিৎকার করে উঠলেন। কামরার সমস্ত মানুষও শেঠজিকে অনুরোধ করছিলেন, যাতে তিনি ফল বিক্রেতাকে টাকাটা দিয়ে দেন। এইদিকে শেঠজি কুলিকে চার আনা দিলেন এবং কুলিটিও প্রতিবাদ করে উঠল যে সে দুটো বড় বড় জিনিস বহন করেছে, তাই তার প্রাপ্য আরো বেশি। শেঠজি তার ওপর চিৎকার করে উঠতে সে ভয়ে চলে গেল। ফল বিক্রেতা তখনও শেঠজিকে অনুরোধ করে যাচ্ছিলেন যেন তিনি তাঁকে সঠিক দামটা দিয়ে দেন।
শেঠজি এক আনা ফল বিক্রেতাকে লক্ষ্য করে প্লাটফর্মে ছুঁড়ে ফেললেন।
ট্রেনটা ছেড়ে দিয়েছিল এবং ফল বিক্রেতা তখনও ট্রেনের সাথে সাথে দৌড়াচ্ছিলেন এবং শেঠজিকে অনুরোধ করছিলেন। শেঠজি সেইদিকে কর্ণপাত না করে অন্যদিকে মুখ ঘুরিয়ে নিয়ে ট্রেনের অপরদিকের জানলা দিয়ে মালগাড়ি দেখতে লাগলেন। একসময় ফল বিক্রেতা হতাশ হয়ে থেমে গেল।
এরপর শেঠজি অন্য যাত্রীদের দিকে ফিরে নিজের কাজকে ঠিম প্রমাণ করার চেষ্টা শুরু করলেন। তিনি সকলকে বোঝাতে চাইলেন যে ঐ ফল বিক্রেতা নিজে থেকেই তাকে উপকার করেছে, এই পুরো ঘটনাটি দেখে লেখক বুঝলেন কামরার সকলেরই ওই গরীব ফল বিক্রেতার জন্য দুঃখ হচ্ছে এবং সবাই শেঠজির প্রতি বিরক্ত।
তখন লেখক শেঠজির একটা কার্টুন আঁকলেন আর সেই কার্টুন অন্য যাত্রীদের দেখাতে শুরু করেন এতে কামরার সকলে খুব খুশি হলেও শেঠজি খুব অস্বস্তিতে পড়ে গেলেন।

English summary of The price of bananas
The author was returning to Lucknow from Faizabad. He arrived at the station earlier. He was watching the monkeys, who were playing happily on the trees and on the platform. They were searching for foods and were ready to jump after any food that may be visible.
The train was announced. The author got a window seat. All were sweating for the scorching heat of summer. The author was watching a monkey, who was snatching away the loin cloth of a pious person. The monkey though returned the cloth to that person, when he requested.
In the mean time a gentleman wearing white muslin dhoti, a tunic and an embroidered cap, entered the compartment. He looked like a businessman. A porter was carrying his luggage. Suddenly a monkey snatched away his fine embroidered cap. He was shouting at that monkey. His face was covered with perspiration. He ran towards the tree. The more he was shouting the remoter the monkey became. The author noticed that it was the same monkey, who snatched the loin cloth.

Meanwhile a fruit hawker came and told the Sethji, that he would rescue the cap. He went ahead with some bananas in his right hand and was persuading the monkey. He stretched his left hand and was trying to coax the monkey to return the cap.
The vendor was talking to the monkey with a soft voice. The monkey climbed down cautiously to a branch near the vendor. The whole platform became silent. The monkey at last took the bananas with his right hand and left the cap with his left hand.
The spectator shouted in praise. The vendor handed over the cap to the Sethji. He said that the monkeys were hungry and that is why they disturbed the passengers. The Sethji took his cap and and turned to go into the compartment. The vendor then requested to Sethji to give him two annas for the bananas that he had to offered to the monkey.
The Sethji shouted at the poor fruit vendor with utter disgust. The rest of the compartment also requested the Sethji to give him the money. Sethji gave four annas to the porter and one anna to the fruit vendor. The porter wailed that he carried two big pieces of luggage. Sethji thundered at the porter and the porter left. The vendor was still requesting to the Sethji that he should give him the proper price as because he saved Sethji’s honourable cap. The man threw an anna towards him on the platform.
The train began to move and the vendor started running along with it and was requesting. Sethji turned his head away and was looking at the goods train on the other side. The frustrated vendor atlast dropped off.
Sethji turned to the other passengers and was trying to justify himself. He was saying that he did not told the vendor to help him, he himself did that and he should not offer the bananas to the monkey. The author felt that every passenger had sympathy for the poor vendor. The whole episode ended in a bitter sense of grievance against the rich businessman.
The author draw a cartoon of the Sethji and showed it to the other passengers. All were laughing and this made the Sethji uncomfortable.
