Arthur Rimbaud’s full name was Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud. He was a French poet and was called ‘the marvelous boy’ of French poetry because by the age of thirteen, he had already won several prizes for his verses in school. Most of his poetry was composed during his youth, between the years 1870-1875, which is why he is popularly referred to the “boy poet”. In fact, his first collection of poems was published in 1870 at the age of 16. The famous writer, Victor Hugo, called him ‘an infant Shakespeare’; such was his skill in poetry. At the age of just 37 years, he left for his heavenly abode.
Summary of the Asleep In The Valley
Asleep in the valley has been written post Franco-Prussian war of 1870. The poem is an English translation of the original version named ‘Le Dormeur du Val’ that Rimbaud wrote earlier in French. It’s an anti war poem where the poet actually elegizes an unnamed soldier lying peacefully and sun-soaked in a bed of ferns with her mouth wide-opened.
At the opening stanza conversely at the Octave part the poet gives a glimpse of lush green tranquil valley nestled between mountains. A stream is flowing in its own pace like a spreading-silver ribbon on the grass bed. In the midst of the nature lap a soldier is lying who appears to be taking a power nap after a tiresome duty. Plausibly his face appears infant like-symbolizing tenderness and innocence. The poem itself gives an image of telescope of nature and its beauty.

At the Sestet part the poem shifts the reader’s focus from panoramic view of the valley towards shoulder’s foot which also in a way is a quantum leap for the mood of the reader. It gives a closure view of the deep wound of bullets in the side of “Lifeless soldier body” generating pain and anger in reader’s mind due to untimely death of an young blood. His delay in portraying the soldier’s death to the end of the poem; is perhaps to heighten the effect and shock the readers into seeing the negative impacts of war.
The word Sleep has been used metaphorically as a synonymous to death.
Here, death and sleep compliments each other as the word sleeps in a way create a preparedness of the grim of death of the soldier. A soldier after enduring the prolong exhaustion of war finally retires peacefully in a deep sleep at the lush green tranquil valley. And this sleep will never break as he is the victim of war – a war which is a meaningless debauchery of innocent human lives.
