For a little while she frees Roger and he looks towards the door, before looking back at Mrs. Jones and then follows her instruction. He asks if she will put him behind the bar, which she denies and tosses him a clean towel.

Mrs. Jones decides to offer him food, assuming that is the sole reason he attempts to steal pocketbook. But Roger adds that he wanted to buy a pair of blue suede shoes, and Mrs. Jones says he could have just ask.

She then explains how previously in her younger days she has attempted wrong path to achieve things she has desired and later she felt ashamed of herself of approaching wrong path. And make herself believe it is always not possible in a life to achieve everything you desire in your mind.

While they were having their meal together she never at once pesters him enquiring about his family background rather she chooses to have a light hearted conversation which successfully made the boy belief that at certain times kindness and affection can be discovered from least expected places.

This establishes a closer connection between two characters.

Considering this, when Mrs. Jones leaves Roger with the wallet, Roger does not want to break her trust, and therefore does not steal the wallet. Further, it is not mentioned whether Mrs. Jones thinks he will take it or not, but it is assumed that she has developed trust on him by the fact that she left him alone. And this is another instance of expectations- the expectation she has on his dignity, of which he feels the weight in his mind and chooses not to break such a fragile thing. After having sumptuous food, he also received the price of his desired shoe 10 dollar as a gift.

At the end of the story, Mrs.Jones shows Roger the door quickly and abruptly as she has brought him to her house. His heart felt a deep sense of gratitude for the first time towards her and while he was ready to thank her, the lady closed the door. Somewhere his mind was too full with kindness to utter any words to showcase his feelings towards her. This represents how a small act of kindness can arrive as a boon to someone’s reformation. We may assume that they might not meet in future, but one brief empathetic interaction can be life-altering for a person like Roger.
